"Worth a Voyage Across
the Atlantic"

So said Thomas Jefferson surveying the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers. Enjoy an interpretive hike with the same stunning views into Harpers Ferry that Jefferson experienced, a stop at the headquarters of the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, then a local farm-to-table feast. This hike can include Maryland Heights. We'll spend the afternoon in a hands-on creative session in studio with a distinguished local artist (sculpting or painting), capped off with a tasting at a vineyard, brewery, or ciderhouse!

Nature & Art in the
Northern Blue Ridge

We'll spend the morning hiking within a unique, 900 acre conservation property in the northern Blue Ridge Province, learning about its rich wildlife diversity, cultural heritage, and organic farming. Then it's off to a midday farm-to-table feast, a brief look at all of Harpers Ferry from the Hilltop ridge, an afternoon session with an award-winning wood sculptor (or other distinguished artist, painting or sculpting), and finally a stop at a local vineyard or brewery!

Mountain Music

Our day begins with a moderate hike up Weverton Cliffs for gorgeous views of the Potomac River, then onward to hear nature's music at the Potoma Wayside where we'll take in Piney Run Falls. Appetites worked up, next we enjoy a local farm-to-table feast and meet up with renowned mountain musician(s) for a conversation and jam session, followed by a second scheduled local performance, a toast, and a last breathtaking view of the river confluence from on high.

Birds & Bees

 We'll start our adventure with a nature walk at a renowned ecological retreat and wildlife sanctuary, identifying plants and birds, then continue there with Beekeeping 101, which includes a comprehensive lesson in starting a hive and a honey tasting. We'll take in a gorgeous view of Harpers Ferry before continuing to historic Shepherdstown for a big, fresh meal at the best taqueria around. In the afternoon, we'll hike and birdwatch at a site administered by the Potomac Valley Audubon Society before returning to Shepherdstown or Harpers Ferry (your choice) for a glass of wine or cocktail, then heading back to our meeting point.

Plants & Permaculture 

Curious about sustainable, self-sufficient, natural ecosystems in food production? Interested in trying a hearty vegan feast? This is the adventure for you! We'll start the day at a renowned ecological sanctuary with a gentle nature hike, herbal tea tasting, and plant-based cooking lesson and meal, all in the service of mindful eating. We'll continue in the afternoon to historic Claymont Court and dive into more permaculture design practices. We'll wrap up our day with a gorgeous view of Harpers Ferry from on high and a delicious vegan meal from the niftiest

Our morning hike choice includes a view from Bear's Den off the Appalachian Trail and a tucked away, secret waterfall (easy) or a walk up to Raven Rocks (moderate). We'll follow with a hearty lunch and a flight at Dirt Farm Brewery, and an afternoon photo safari at the Virginia Arboretum with a  professional photographer and environmentalist. We'll wrap

up our day with a fine whiskey

tasting at Catoctin Creek Distillery.

" ... am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land can never be purged away but with blood." So wrote John Brown on a scrap of paper handed to a guard just before his execution in Charles Town. We explore the passionate abolitionist's raid in Harpers Ferry and the reaction of some residents including the priest of the town's St. Peter's Catholic Church. We'll walk former Storer College, home of the Niagara Movement, precursor to the NAACP and

learn about W.E.B. DuBois' and Mary Talbert's calls to action. After a farm-to-table feast, we'll head to Charles Town, taking in the infamous courthouse. We'll have a flight at Abolitionist Ale sharing our impressions, then

take a walk along Bolivar Heights, before finishing up with a blues-folk private jam session.

A Home of the Revolution 

Our respected local historian 

leads an exploration of 

Jefferson County's key Revolutionary War era sites

with us this morning. We'll

lunch on healthy, hearty fare

in Shepherdstown, then in the afternoon, we'll join 

West Virginia Professor

of the Year (2015), Sonya Evanisko, to find our inner artists  in a painting session that melds environmental sensitivity and creative instinct. We'll finish out the day with a stop on high to see the convergence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers at historic Harpers Ferry.

Our morning begins with interpretive hiking at the School House Ridge South battlefield, then onto Murphy-Chamber Farm. We'll lunch farm-to-table in Shepherdstown or Harpers Ferry, then continue on to Antietam to explore one of the most heart-wrenching confrontations

of the Civil War. We'll wrap up

at Harper Ferry Brewing or The Barn of Harpers Ferry with a mountain music jam by

famous Fiddlin' Dave of The Woodshedders and most magical Morgan of Furnace Mountain.
